Facebook Request Prevention: How to Stop Unwanted Friend Requests and Spam
Unwanted Facebook requests can compromise your privacy and clutter your notifications. Whether you are dealing with random strangers, bots, or persistent acquaintances, Facebook provides built-in tools to limit who can contact you.
Here is a practical guide to locking down your account and preventing unwanted requests. Adjust Who Can Send You Friend Requests
By default, Facebook allows anyone on the platform to send you a friend request. You can instantly restrict this by changing your privacy settings.
Open Settings: Click your profile picture, select Settings & Privacy, then click Settings.
Navigate to Audience: Scroll down to the “Audience and Visibility” section and select How People Find and Contact You.
Modify the Option: Find “Who can send you friend requests?” and change it from Everyone to Friends of Friends.
This single adjustment blocks completely random accounts and bots from adding you. Hide Your Friends List
Spammers and bad actors often target the connections of your connections. If they see your friends list, they can mimic people you know or target your network. Go back to How People Find and Contact You. Find Who can see your friends list? Change the setting to Friends or Only Me. Limit Search Engine Indexing
If your Facebook profile is indexed by public search engines like Google, anyone searching your name can find your profile and attempt to interact with you.
In the same contact settings menu, locate Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your profile? Click edit and uncheck the box to turn this feature off. Manage App and Game Requests
Annoying notifications often come from apps and games rather than actual people. You can cut off these digital disruptions entirely.
In your main Settings menu, look under the “Permissions” section and click on Apps and Websites. You can remove old apps you no longer use.
To stop all game invites, go to Settings & Privacy > Settings > Blocking, and look for the Block app invites or Block apps section to stop specific friends or applications from buzzing your phone. Use Blocking and Restricting as a Last Resort
If a specific individual bypasses your settings or continues to harass you through other means, you have two direct options:
Restrict: Adding someone to your “Restricted” list keeps them as a friend, but they can only see your public posts. They will not know they are restricted.
Block: Blocking completely severs the connection. They can no longer see your profile, tag you, invite you to groups, or send you messages.
